In October of 1959, a small group of people from Bunn and its surrounding areas discussed the need for a local fire department and from this meeting, on Dec 17th 1959 Bunn Rural Fire Association Inc was officially formed. The Town of Bunn leased an old service station and remodeled it for a fire station and a new engine was purchased for approximately $10,000. During the next decade a tanker was added as well as a converted military vehicle for a brush truck.
During the mid-1970’s the department decided a new station was needed and land across the street from the original fire station was purchased for a new station. This station was 3 bays (a 4th was added shortly after) with 2 offices and a meeting room. Sometime around the end of 1993 a new station committee was formed and developed plans for the next station. After many meetings and visits to other departments the new station plans were completed. This station would be around 12,00 sq ft with 3 drive thru bays and 2 non-drive thru bays. Additionally, there were offices, a large meeting room , a day room and areas for 2 small dorm rooms. This new station opened in late 1995 and serves today as Station 1.
The late 90’s and early 2000’s saw tremendous growth as 3 engines were purchased and the need for more stations was discovered. In 1998 Station 2 opened to serve the western portion of the district. In 2002 Station3 opened to serve the Lake Royale Community, a private gated community with a 350-acre lake and 3000 surrounding acres. During this time growth caused additional apparatus to include another engine as well as a heavy rescue.
To keep up with our community we are constantly evaluating what we have and what is need in the future. We are currently entering into plans for a 4th station as well as deciding what apparatus we need in the near future.
In the beginning we were a 100% volunteer department made up of business owners, farmers, retirees, and anyone who had the time to help the department. This model worked for us for many, many years until the area started really growing. Due to urban sprawl, farms disappeared, small businesses got bigger, and many of those that helped saw their time available start slowly disappearing. To keep up with higher call volumes and more administrative demands we transitioned to a combination department in 2013 by adding 1 Full time position and 2 part-time positions.
Today, the department serves our community with 2 Full-time positions supplemented by 2-3 part-timers Monday -Friday during normal working hours with volunteers still helping. During night-time hours, weekends, and holidays our volunteers still handle 100% of the calls.
